ChatGPT vs a dedicated listing tool
An honest comparison — including the parts where ChatGPT wins. If you only have five SKUs, use ChatGPT. This page tells you where the line is.
| ChatGPT | ListingCheck | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $20/mo | $19/mo |
| Handles 500 rows | No — one at a time | Yes — one CSV |
| Knows your category's character limit | No, you check | Yes, per marketplace |
| Flags banned words | Inconsistent | Yes, versioned list of 63 |
| Creative, on-brand copy | Better | Good enough |
| Data handling | Your call | Deleted within 1 hour |
When ChatGPT is the better choice
- You have fewer than 20 SKUs and can spot issues yourself.
- You need a distinctive brand voice — a template will sound like a template.
- You enjoy the back-and-forth and don't mind re-pasting context.
When a rule-based tool wins
- 50+ SKUs, or more than one marketplace.
- You have been suppressed before and need to find the offending word across every listing.
- You need an audit trail: which rule failed, on which SKU, and what changed.
The honest answer
Use ChatGPT to draft, then run the draft through a rule checker. We don't pretend to replace the model — we replace the part where you manually count characters at 11pm.
What each one actually costs over a year
| ChatGPT Plus | ListingCheck Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | $240 / year | $228 / year |
| Your time on rules | 30–60 min per batch of 20 SKUs | Near zero — the rules are applied for you |
| Cost of one suppression | Days of lost sales, a case, sometimes a reinstatement plan | |
The subscription prices are close. The difference is where the time goes: with a chat window, you are the rule engine.
At 200 SKUs, the two workflows
ChatGPT: paste 5 SKUs at a time, ask for a title, copy the result, repeat 40 times, then check the character limits yourself because the model cannot see your category. Roughly two hours, plus the risk of inconsistent formatting across batches.
A checker: one CSV, one run, a table of flags and cleaned titles, then a review pass on the rows that matter. Twenty minutes, and every output follows the same rules.
Neither is “better” in the abstract. One is flexible and slow; the other is rigid and fast. At 200 SKUs the second wins on consistency alone.
Data handling
A chat window sends your listing copy to a third party and keeps it in that conversation. A browser-only checker processes the file locally and sends nothing. If your listings contain unreleased products, that difference matters.
When to switch
- You have been suppressed more than once → move to a rule checker first.
- You sell across three or more marketplaces → the per-marketplace limits are the bottleneck.
- You write fewer than ten listings a month → stay with ChatGPT; the tool would be idle.
